Who should get a comprehensive eye check-up?

A comprehensive eye check-up can be availed by any individual of any age. However, it is even more important for those with:

i) Age > 40 years

ii) Family history of eye disorder (glaucoma, retinal problem)

What are the tests done in comprehensive eye check-up?

Most comprehensive eye exams include:

  • Visual Acuity assessment to check your vision.
  • Visual fields test, to determine if you have blind spots or peripheral vision issues.
  • Cover Test, which can identify strabismus or binocular vision problems.
  • Colour vision test to identify colour blindness and contrast tests for detecting very mild changes in vision that are not picked up by routine tests.
  • Extraocular muscle movement
  • Retinoscopy and autorefractor, to determine your eyeglass prescription.
  • Slit Lamp exam to detect common eye diseases and conditions.
  • Glaucoma test, using non-contact tonometer to measure the intraocular pressure of your eye.

How much time does a comprehensive eye check-up take?

A comprehensive eye examination can last up to an hour or more as there are a number of eye tests that are performed.

Can I come alone for a comprehensive eye check-up? Can I drive after an eye check-up?

If dilation of your eyes is required for your check-up, you will be seeing near objects blurry for 3-4 hours. Hence it is recommended to have an attendant with you for the check-up, and not to drive after this test.
